Welcome

Today, I have finally taken the step to have an official blog. Eventually, most likely soon, this will take the place of my Newsboard on my website. My idea in having this blog is to continue my musings as I have on the Newsboard, and this opens it up for interaction and comments. So I welcome you here, and look forward to sharing and hearing back from you all.

Here in Japan!

Arrived last night. Ready to go today. Starting with Nagato training shortly. I will update as insights come to me. I am still getting used to "blogging", so forgive me for any clumsiness :-)

On another note, you may see that the newsboard on my homepage now links directly to this blog, so you have the opportunity to comment and share. Second, the photography button is now live, taking you to another site where you can order photos directly. I have also put those links on the top menu bar as well.

Thanks for checking in, and looking forward to hearing from you!!

Thoughts from Japan

Having had a couple of training sessions with Soke, as most of you are aware, he has spoken of "kaname". I won't go into translation of that, as there are those far more qualified to do so. But I will share my experience and thoughts on it. One definition could be thought of as "essence".  I carefully watched Soke, and looked for this sense of kaname. I am not sure I can share what it is, but what I did see, was his ability to hold the uke suspended, and then as uke recovered, he touched a point, or moved a certain way that of coursed, caused either another suspension, or uke to ungracefully fall. It seems to be one step more advanced from last year,  the 1 point, 2 point, more points, to affect the body. He spoke of playing, like a cat playing with his prey, this sort of feeling. Here a few images I hope may give some impression of this.

This first image may not be clear, but his hands are at his side. He is affecting uke with his position and shoulder.
Here, Soke has turned, and very lightly placed his right hand on uke's shoulder. Between the 1st and 2nd move, uke has attempted to recover slightly. Soke gives and then takes away again.
Notice how deeply he steps behind, affecting purely by his position, no power.
Awkward and difficult ukemi to fall from the position above. Hence the "ungraceful" fall!

I would like to share from Cinzia Dolcini from Italy, who was in Japan earlier. What she wrote captures very well what I felt and saw from Soke this trip. This is what she had to say:

"The theme of the year: KANAME and in general a broader expression, see my site in: http://www.bujinkantorino.it/en/news.html
Soke used also expressions like KANAME NO IDO: "the movement of kaname" (I feel that is connected with the movement of oneself around a pivot, for example. Or the movement of the pain "main point" in different places. Or counter-attack moving kaname from me to the opponent.)
TOMEI NO KANAME: "the transparent kaname". Some people have translated like "invisible", but invisible in Japanese is another word. In this case Soke used "tomei" that is transparent, so maybe it has a slight different aspect.
KUKAN NO KANAME: "the main point of the space". (I could just see it when an opponent was in the ground and he was about in standing up and Soke has controlled him..it gave me the idea that the main point of his control was located in the space between the feet of Soke and the opponent's body. Just for example)"

Thank you Cinzia for that contribution. Very clarifying and I think also helps to give others the feeling by reading it.

Kunoichi Taikai Japan March 23-23, 2013
Everyone Invited!!!

It is official!!
Another Kunoichi Taikai is planned for 23-24 March, 2013!
(see later post updated location and date change)

This event will take place in Japan, home of Bujinkan and Grandmaster Hatsumi Masaaki. Mark your calendars, and prepare for another event of a lifetime. Soke has agreed to teach these 2 days of kunoichi training for everyone. He has said if we can get over 150 women to attend, he will arrange a special training hall to accommodate all of us. At time of this writing, we do not yet have a city or location established.

Soke has said on numerous occasions in the last couple years, that Takamatsu Sensei, his teacher, taught him kunoichi training towards the end of this learning period. He has also stated this is important training for both men and women to understand and learn. Therefore this event is open to both men and women of Bujinkan. As such, though, we do need as mentioned, at least 150 women attending.

The kunoichi website will offer ongoing information on the event as it unfolds. You'll notice that we have a section for kunoichi to sign up. This is not a registration form, but an information form for us to keep count of how many women will be coming. This is needed to keep Soke informed. So please, kunoichi, before signing up, as much as possible, be sure you will attend. Do not sign this if you "would like to attend, but are not sure". Certainly, we understand that circumstances change, and emergencies arise, so please, be quite sure you are attending before signing.

For those who are coming to Japan for the first time, we will have an Information page. This will have a listing of accommodations, training-dojo etiquette and what to expect while there.

Pass the word to as many buyu, dojos and kunoichi as possible. If you have questions or comments, please use the Contact Us form on the site, or you can email me.

This is another first time event! We are excited and hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Enbukan Batto Seminar

Enbukan Battojutsu Seminar May 12th

What is it?

Enbukan Battojutsu is an umbrella for several koryu (old) schools of Japanese martial traditions, including Enshin Itto Ryu school of Battojutsu, the sword art of the Machida family. The Enbukan is the formal organization which contains many of the koryu / kobujutsu offered to general students.
The arts of the Enbukan are kept as individual koryu taught alongside each other in their original formats. The system has a strong focus on classical Japanese swordsmanship which includes:
- Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu
- Jigen Ryu Battojutsu
- Muso Shinden Fudo Ikken Ryu Battojutsu
- Nen Ryu Battojutsu
- Mugai Ryu Battojutsu
Enbukan training is not widely available outside Japan. There is a relatively small number of Enbukan Dojo and many of these Dojo are run by jikideshi (direct disciples) of Machida Kenshinsai, Soke. Unlike martial arts organizations which are made up of multiple ryuha (schools), many of these Enbukan Dojo do not teach every ryuha of the Enbukan. Students of the Enbukan are separately licensed to teach individual schools.
Most of the Enbukan schools outside of Japan, teach the sword schools of the Enbukan. These sword schools, characterized by an emphasis on the application of drawing (nukiuchi), cutting (giri), and returning the sword to its saya or sheath (noto), are called Battojutsu. Sword training in the Enbukan emphasizes application and correct understanding of the historical principles of the school, as well as the esoteric or spiritual elements that come with long-term training.

Who are they?

The Machida clan served under the Tokugawa Shogunate and are a respected Samurai family. On the maternal side, the Tagyu Clan has served under the Aizu Clan. After being defeated in the Saccho Aizu Boshin War, the predecessors of the Machida Clan fled to Hitachinaka (modern Ibaraki prefecture) Sukegawa and developed Bugei Ryu Sogo Budo, his system of classical Japanese martial arts, now known as the Enbukan.

Machida Kenshinsai, Sensei, together with his son Machida Takeshi, Soshihan (master and successor), run The Enbukan World Organization in Nodashi, Japan. Kancho, as he likes to be called, is Soke of many of these schools and holds the rank of menkyo kaiden in those that he is not. The Enbukan schools are hereditary and were passed to Machida Kancho by his father.

Machida Takeshi, Soshihan, trains, teaches, and functions as the senior instructor of the Enbukan and is dedicated to teaching and training in the traditional koryu methods of budo (martial way). The emphasis is to accurately pass on the realistic and practical traditions of budo.
Machida Kancho, is also a Shingon Priest and Machida Takeshi, Soshihan, is in training.

Enbukan Philosophy

Although sword fighting is no longer practiced today, the principles of swordfighting apply in our everyday life, in addition to enhancing and providing an underpinning for any other martial art we may study.

The focus in battojutsu is to address directly what is needed, to use utmost precision and speed; the practice of cutting straight and cutting fast. Awareness is heightened, skills are honed through kata, partner practice and tameshigiri (target cutting). The necessity of balance, posture and positioning become obvious. Emphasis is placed on extremely quick draw (nukiuchi), cutting (giri), and sheathing (noto). Sword training in the Enbukan emphasizes application and correct understanding of the historical principles of the school, as well as the esoteric or spiritual elements that come with long-term training.

The philosophy is one of experiencing the sword as one with the self, an extension of the body - mind. The development of spirit is critical in the uniting of body and mind to achieve accuracy of intention, projection of energy, unification with the center and the deep will to survive.

What am I teaching?

I am sharing the skills and kata from Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu art within the Enbukan. These are considered the basic skills and forms in order to understand the more complex and varied moves of the other styles. Enshin Itto Ryu is the ryu of Kancho's father, who developed this system after studying and training in many other styles in the later 1800's. He passed this system on to his son, Kenshinsai, Kancho.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Michi Schweizer. The seminar will be held in Ulm-Goegglingen, Germany.

Photo Sharing

Thought I would share a few photos from some recent trips. I realize most of you read my posts expecting something martial related, but since I don't have anything specific right now, and am not feeling particularly inspired along those lines, (it does happen from time to time) I thought I would share what I am working on.

Amsterdam
This photo was processed to look like an old polaroid, for those of you who remember those days. And posted or clipped onto a cardboard. Just a fun piece, sort of the way we also used to post pictures on our refrigerators.

A recent visit to the Gardens in the Netherlands, specifically for a spring flower photo shoot. Tulip fields carpeting the land, the colors were magnificent.

I received the book today! It is a master piece a collection item just wonderful.
Every Bujinkan practitioner should have this book in his collection. I can't really call it a book as such it's truly a collection item.

Wow. This book is an amazing piece of art. Just got a copy today of "Masaaki Hatsumi - A Life in Pictures" by Sheila Haddad. Thank you Sheila for a fantastic work you have put together. It contains a lot of phrases from Soke and some of absolute best photos I have ever seen of Soke through out his life. The detail with the magnets is so fine and reminds me of one of the feelings in Gyokko ryu.

Update and Catch up News!!

It's been a while.....

I have thought often about posting something, feeling more the pressure of not writing rather than having anything really to share. Now the time feels right to give any readers I may have, a catch up on the month of September. I have since been on a photo safari and leave shortly for Japan. Those updates will be posted later!

September was a busy and full month. The first week spent in BC Canada with good friends Shawn Grey from Japan and Morten Ostenstad from Norway. Dear friend Mike Smith from the Sunshine coast hosted us all, and arranged for a 2 day camping/ninja-games-in-the-woods (called Shugyosai, meaning hardship training) trip. That fun was followed up by a 2 day seminar at Whytecliff Park in Vancouver.

The gang!
Shawn resting,  we're enjoying....

The games...ninjas vs samurai, no telling who won!!
By the campfire :D

Morning has come!

This time Morten is resting....

Our fearless leader.

Do you think this looked like hardship training?

You can see all the photos from the week here:  Buyu Photogallery

And a few more from the weekend seminar:

Next up.....A Wedding Event!

One other major, personal family event was the wedding of my second daughter (the older being married already some years to Jeremiah Price). Although I keep my personal life rather personal I will share what a happy event it was, and being the biased Mom that I am, how beautiful. Here are a couple pictures from that time in September.

Kunoichi Taikai Update!!

Small Date and Location Change!

News from Japan. Due to complicating circumstances, the date for the Taikai has changed by 1 day. The event will now be held on Friday and Saturday, March 22nd and 23rd. Unlike the above banner (which is in the process of being changed), so please make note.

The new and fixed location now is the Budokan in Ayase, the very same (wonderful matted area) of many DKMS and Soke's Tuesday classes.

Agenda: Soke has said he will show us the techniques he learned from Takamatsu Sensei as well as focusing on strategy and intuition, which he feels women already have quite developed.  He wants us to make more use of it in our training. Of course the event is open for men, and we hope we have a good showing of male buyu who are interested in Takamatsu's teachings, as well as Soke's. (and no, we do not need you for "punching bags" but rather enjoy the training and learning together) A good opportunity to learn/experience the "In/Yin" side of Bujinkan training. Think of it as a rounding out of our taijutsu :-).

Times: Friday and Saturday training times: 10-12 and 14:00-16:00 (2-4pm)
Cost: 14,000 yen for both days, to be paid only at the door. No prepayments are taken.

Please be sure to check the Bujinkan Kunoichi website for continuous updates.

Next Post...

will talk more about the Photobiography book of Hatsumi Soke, show some pictures of the making of... and explain to those of you who wonder/comment on the cost of the book. Stay tuned...

The Making of the Photo Biography Book of Soke Hatsumi

By now, most of you have seen or have heard of the "A Life in Pictures" the photobiography book of Hatsumi Soke. It was a 3 year long project, but started in 2007 when he asked me to take photos at the DKMS of that year. Little did I know what course this would set me on. As I consider this path ongoing, I can only say that this book is one great, fun goal on this journey. I would like to share a bit of it's making with you.

Myself with Alex Esteve

I contacted my good friend Alex Esteve in Barcelona, as he has plenty experience with publishing and book printing. He connected me up with a company there, and I have met wonderful people supportive of this project all along the way.

The vision of this book was conceived by me, but it's actual finished look is a collaboration. While sitting in the book binders office, looking at thousands upon thousands of books and covers, slowly the cover of this book unfolded. What we decided upon had never been done. Those of you who have held the book know how unique and beautiful it feels (I am not modest to say)  Between Alex, the owner of the book binding business and myself, we put this together. Since it was only in our minds I was hard pressed to imagine it's reality. The first iteration I held in my hands, with the gold imprinted cover was astounding. I was thrilled and knew then, this is it.

The plates

Master page

The printing machines, in 4 colors, 4 machines

The next amazing piece was my being allowed to be there for the master printing. Each page I was able to scrutinize and suggest less or more color, or contrast or whatever was needed. Even before that process I went to the business where the plates for each and every page was made before being sent over to the printers. It was in all, an enlightening experience, and one I am grateful for Alex's guidance and connections to have.

Checking it over, getting it right.

Many have commented on the price of the book, and I understand it can be a shock when one sees it, without having physically seen or held the book. It weighs over 3 pounds. I won't justify it's costs other than to say, I did not cut corners, every piece is of the highest quality, and this is something I made to honor our Grandmaster, his life, his gifts to us, all that he has given. To do that, it can be no less than the best. And as you may know, there are a limited quantity, consider it a collectors edition. It is not for everyone, but it is for all time.

Safe and Secure order via Paypal or Credit Card

In the Store are also Kunoichi Taikai items, and Alex's book, "Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu - A Ninja Tradition". Take a look!!

On My Way to Japan

Leaving Germany, after the heavy snow storm yesterday, only hoping that today will be an uneventful travel day. Hm, I'll need patience, flexibility and lots to read possibly.

So far for the Kunoichi Taikai, there have been 145 women who have signed the "Who is Going" form on the website. I am hoping there are more who did not sign and are going. I have no idea how many men will show up, but it looks like the event could have 250 or more participants.

There are some international media outlets interested in covering the event, and doing some interviews. A Japanese journalist has taken an interest in the event, and organized not only the media, but possibly some ambassadors to attend some portion of it. It was not my intent to have all this publicity, and managed to keep it all at a minimum.

Johaniek Sulzberger and Elizabeth Scally have been invaluable for on the ground work there. They truly have organized all the details and seen them through. Doug Wilson has been instrumental in communications between Soke and the organizing team, and his support is phenomenal.

Now we shall see. I am very much looking forward to what Soke will be sharing. I'll report along the way.

Thank you to those who are reading and supporting the Bujinkan Kunoichi.

Until next time....

I have a few "Masaaki Hatsumi, A life in Pictures" books with me. It's a great way to pick one up right away, and deal with shipping. So if you are in Japan, grab it, as I couldn't bring too many.

The Kunoichi Taikai has come and gone. It's been a wonderful event, well attended, and Soke was very happy. It had the feel of a DKMS, yet not. There were certainly more women than ever at one time in Japan, and this contributed, in my opinion, to a unique feeling in training and within the group.

Words I heard to describe this feeling were; joyful, fun, light hearted, no competition, no ego, a sense of balance. All interesting I think. I invite anyone who attended to add a comment and share their experience, thoughts and feelings for others to get a better sense of this unique, and most likely, not-to-be-repeated event.

The first day of training we had 220 buyu in attendance. 110 were women. The second day we had 250 participating, with 27 countries represented!!

The men of the Kunoichi Taikai

In this image, I had the women in position for a picture, and looked behind me to see this! I did a quick snap, snap, snap to get 6 images I stitched together to give this view, that I saw, to share.

Soke with 109 women (minus the photographer) :-)

I had the opportunity to sit with Soke during the lunch breaks, to chat and mostly listen. He told me that getting on the mat, having so many people here, gave him energy. He had an enthusiasm and youthfulness, that we saw and uke's felt. But he says, he tires easily now.

He also told me that it is the job of the women now, to pass onto the younger generation of women, the training needed to live and thrive in today's world. To find their strengths, to know themselves as women, feminine and warrior together. We women need to share this, and to do this, we continue to have women's training. So anytime there is a kunoichi seminar or event, we women, make the effort to go, to share, and pass on modern day kunoichi skills and strategies.

There was the expectation of Soke teaching kunoichi techniques. He did expand and create variations from techniques that were shown by women, in Sokes fashion. And on the other side, with half the room being men, he taught also as a usual class or DKMS event. The Taikai was a mix of principles and techniques, form and formless, that only Soke can do. In this way, there was the feeling of a DKMS, yet with so many women there, and the focus put on women, there was a uniquely feminine feeling as well. My sense was Soke wanted to be sure there was something for everyone.

The After Taikai Party
The Taikai Party was held at the hotel on the corner across from the train station in Ayase. We had 190 in attendance, and entertainment. The talented and professional singer and composer, Beate Proettel from Germany, shared her voice and talent to a enraptured audience.  Doug Wilson joined her as they sang and played guitar to a song Doug wrote and composed for our dear departed kunoichi, Kathy Baylor. I know I wasn't the only one, secretly wiping some tears off my cheeks. Hiromi, another kunoichi, and her students accompanied the singing with their middle eastern dancing. On stage and mixing with the attendees, they moved gracefully around the room. Eye candy for all.

Soke singing "You are my Sunshine" and totally enjoying himself!!

And most importantly, those who volunteered in a variety of capacities, to make this go as smoothly and elegantly as it did. A special acknowledgment and thank you to Doug Wilson, Elizabeth Scally, and Johaniek Sulzberger for their work on the ground in the weeks and months leading up to the event. My sincerest and heartfelt thanks. Yabanaka-san was instrumental in our acquiring the Ayase Budokan for the event. Without him "sticking his neck out" we would not have had a location. He also made sure Soke had lunch, tea and all his needs met personally. I wish to single him out specially for acknowledgement and sincere gratitude. If you see him, please thank him in person!!

To all who attended, thank you for making this event a success, and for the joy and happiness Soke felt in having everyone there.
The Volunteers who made this all possible, and the entertainment!!

followed by a 2 day Bujinkan Seminar taught by Gillian Booth, Cathy Lewis and myself in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

So you wonder what this is about? The final one? What about the previous ones?

A little history here is in order. Several years ago I began documenting kunoichi training around the world. Mike Smith from the Sunshine Coast (great name, isn't it) BC, Canada had the idea to create outdoor training for the kunoichi and I did the photography (participated as well) and ended the week with a Bujinkan seminar open for all. We continued this over the years, with week long training through all the seasons.

I put together a book for Soke as a gift for this last Kunoichi Taikai Japan. The book is filled with images of kunoichi training throughout the world, and in all seasons. I decided that I didn't want to publish this book, or have it printed myself and absorb all the cost, which I can't. Since movement is towards e-books, I had the idea of adding some video clips to the e-book experience. And that is the plan for this final week. I will be taking video as well as images to add to the book, for it's final publication, both in print (minus video) and e-book version.

Currently, anyone can order the book in print as is the one I gave Soke. This is available from Blurb, a print on demand company. The book is not priced for profit, as it is already expensive as a one off. But it is large size with a few hundred images. You can view or purchase it here. In addition, there is the current e-book available inexpensively, minus the video. Also available here. The pictures look fantastic on a tablet :-).

So, here we are. This current project, and my last, will be held September 17-20th, 2013. The 21-22nd is a Bujinkan seminar open for all, with all three of the kunoichi Shihan instructing. That will be at Whytecliffe Park, Horsehoe Bay, Vancouver.  All activities take place outdoors on the beautiful coast of British Columbia. We already have quite a number of women interested, and space is limited. For further information (website) contact Mike Smith via this website.
